Stephen Eighteen
Head of Real Estate
RBS

Stephen Eighteen is Head of Real Estate in the Global Restructuring Group of RBS and is responsible for managing the restructuring of real estate loans across the banks global portfolio and for ultimately formulating the exit strategy for some of these exposures as part of the banks non core disposal programme.

Stephen started his career in banking with Barclays during the secondary banking crisis in 1974, moved to work in the City of London for ABN during the recession of 1980/1 and subsequently managed the work out of a UK real estate finance book for Fennoscandia (a Scandinavian owned banking group) during the 1990-94 recession.

In 1995 Stephen left banking to head the financial advisory team at DTZ advising real estate equity investors on the raising of debt, formation of both joint ventures and limited partnership funds and corporate occupiers on their real estate ownership structures.

In 1998 Stephen was recruited by NatWest to build a new UK structured property finance team and following the takeover of NatWest in 2000 performed a similar role for RBS. This included senior debt underwriting (both banking and CMBS), provision of mezzanine debt, joint venture equity and principal finance.

In 2004 Stephen assumed responsibility to manage the GBM real estate finance business across Europe which quickly expanded into the Asia-Pac region and ultimately led to Stephen being appointed Global Head of GBM’s real estate finance business (incl US) in 2008.

Stephen currently sits on the Bank of England Property Forum and the PIA Property Debt Working Party and is a regular speaker at real estate industry events.
